Get Around

How to Get Around at Koh Lipe island

Koh Lipe is a charming little island situated in the Andaman Sea off the coast of Thailand, covering an area of about 4.6 square kilometers. Despite being one of the smallest inhabited islands in Thailand, it is a well-known tourist destination renowned for its serene beaches, crystal-clear waters, and relaxed vibe. Without a doubt, it is an island paradise and one of the top destinations in Thailand.

Exploring the island is a breeze due to the availability of several transportation options. Walking is the most popular way to get around as the island is compact and straightforward to navigate. Many of the prominent attractions such as the beaches and shops are within walking distance of each other.

Bicycle rentals are available throughout the island, and it is an enjoyable and convenient way to explore the area. Inquire at your resort as they may provide bike rentals.

Alternatively, tuk-tuks are widely available, and taxis are relatively inexpensive, making them a great option for visitors who prefer not to cycle. These vehicles can be easily flagged down on the street or pre-booked.

Despite its size, Koh Lipe offers visitors plenty to see and do, and there are various transportation options available to make your exploration of the island easy and stress-free.

Whether you choose to walk, rent a bike, or take a tuk-tuk, you’ll be able to experience the beauty and charm of Koh Lipe at your own pace.

Explore the Island by Foot

As previously stated, Koh Lipe is a petite island measuring only 2 kilometers in length and 1 kilometer in width, and it takes no more than 30 minutes to walk from one beach to another. I highly recommend exploring the island on foot.

The central thoroughfare is known as “Walking Street,” where a plethora of restaurants, massage parlors, and shops are situated.

Take a Boat Trip Around Koh Lipe

While vacationing in Koh Lipe, don’t miss the chance to embark on an island-hopping adventure by boat. During the tour, you’ll get to visit several breathtaking islands featuring interesting rock formations, witness various wildlife, including lizards and monkeys, marvel at the extraordinary bioluminescent plankton, and explore incredible spots for snorkeling and swimming.

If you’re fortunate enough, you may even discover your own private beach, which is still possible in Thailand!

There are four island-hopping itineraries available from Koh Lipe, namely Program A, B, Sunset Trip, and Plankton Trip, with Programs A and B being the most popular.

My personal favorite was Tour B, which turned out to be the highlight of my trip. The islands, beaches, and marine life were all spectacular and awe-inspiring!

This Koh Lipe snorkeling tour allows you to experience the best parts of the journey without the hassle of arranging it all yourself.

Go on a Day Trip to Koh Adang (Hike Koh Lipe Viewpoint)

If you’re looking for a way to get some exercise while enjoying breathtaking views, consider hiking up the mountain on Koh Adang, the island located in front of Koh Lipe. From the top, you’ll have a bird’s-eye view of the “Maldives of Thailand”, a sight not to be missed.

The boat ride to Koh Adang takes approximately 20 minutes. Once you arrive, you can easily find the trail that leads up to three viewpoints. The hike takes between 30 to 40 minutes each way and is suitable for everyone. Most of the trail is shaded, making it a pleasant journey.

The views from the top are simply stunning, and it’s easy to see why it’s called the Koh Lipe viewpoint. To ensure a comfortable hike, it’s best to start early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, suitable shoes, sunglasses, and your camera to capture the magnificent scenery.

Enjoy a Few Water Activities

If you’re ready for a break from lounging on the picturesque beaches of Koh Lipe, then it’s time to explore the underwater world. Koh Lipe boasts crystal-clear, balmy blue waters that are home to 25 percent of the world’s tropical fish species, making it one of Thailand’s premier destinations for diving and snorkeling.

While you can snorkel almost anywhere in Koh Lipe, some of the best spots are near the two tiny islands off of Sunrise Beach, especially at low tide when the water becomes calm, shallow, and transparent.

However, it’s essential to note that the coral reef is protected, so snorkelers need to be cautious, especially during low tide. Kayaking is also an excellent activity to enjoy on Koh Lipe, as the water is typically calm. Some hotels even offer complimentary kayaks and snorkeling masks for their guests.

Eat Your Way Around Koh Lipe

Thai cuisine is renowned globally for its unique and mouth-watering taste. When it comes to island destinations, the food is usually fresher and even more delicious than on the mainland. Koh Lipe is no exception, and its restaurants are sure to impress.

You’ll find an array of fresh fruits and exotic dishes made with curry and coconut milk, among other incredible combinations. Don’t miss the chance to indulge in Thai cuisine during your visit to Koh Lipe.

Numerous excellent restaurants are scattered throughout the island, with many located on the “Walking Street.” While on Koh Lipe, be sure to try the Tom Kha Gai (Chicken Coconut Soup) at Nee Papaya and the authentic Thai grilled fish at Papaya Mom.

Try Out Scuba Diving in Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe offers an excellent opportunity for scuba diving enthusiasts with its vibrant marine life and colorful coral reefs. Even if you are not certified, you can take advantage of professional dive schools to get your open water certification.

In addition to the open water certification, you can also take a 1-day scuba diving course to get a feel for the marine life in Koh Lipe. With Koh Tarutao, one of Asia’s oldest marine parks, located nearby, the coral reefs are well-protected.

For those looking for dive schools, Forra Dive Resort is a great option, offering lessons as well as beach bungalows. Other reputable dive schools include Pura Vida Diving Koh Lipe and Ko Lipe Diving School.
